Electrolytes

What are electrolytes ?

Electrolytes are a special classification of minerals carrying an electrical charge. Their main function is regulating fluid balance between cells & the blood stream. Some of the main electrolytes in the human body are sodium, chloride & potassium. Highly active individuals secrete more minerals and electrolytes.

Many sports drink contain water, carbohydrates and electrolytes. Athletes can use these during and after exercise. Endurance athletes should place more emphasis on hydration, carbohydrate intake and then focus on electrolyte levels.

Considerations

Drinks lower in electrolytes are most appropriate during workouts. This is due to higher electrolyte concentrations delaying gastric emptying and impairing hydration and carbohydrate use during physical activity.

Benefits of carbohydrate & electrolyte drinks are less clear for exercises under 90 minutes assuming glycogen have been replenished prior to exercise.
