How far can a pair of dumbbells take you ?

2 adjustable dumbells. If you use it right, you will conquer the world. Well, as usual I’m stating things like an old man who is explaining a mysterious concept that he believes to be a treasure to lost beginners, in the pursuit of fitness.


Let me guide you, amateurs.




You can start with 1 kg for each side. If you do this properly, down the line you will dumbbell press over 40 kgs from each hand for your chest. Well, let me rephrase that, down the line isn’t 3 months, down the line is something like ……. 7 to 8 years. You must be thinking, not again, what’s with this guy and his over 5 year training programs when there are 3 month programs in the market !!


But that’s the beauty of it, most of you will never achieve this, and for the few who will pull it off, you will be rewarded. I like the fact that people can’t achieve this quickly, everyone wants everything instantly these days. Remember, respect is built from perseverance and hard work, such fundamentals shouldn’t change with time.



Did you know you can easily train over 100 exercises with a pair of dumbells. Yes that iron bar and weight plates is the apparatus to building over 17 inch arms and an incredible strength, at your home. On the other hand, after seeing prices soar with inflation, I have reason to believe buying weight plates is a safer investment than leaving it in my bank account, and maybe that mindset, is also why I don’t have much savings.


Back to the point. You don't believe that you can train over 100 exercises using a pair of dumbells ?


Well lets take a small muscle group, relatively small, biceps brachii. You can hit dumbbell curls, alternate dumbbell curls, hammer curls, cross body hammer curls, concentration curls, reverse dumbbell curls, dumbbell incline curls, pronated dumbbell curls. Now, if you merge this with different concepts, different intensifiers, you will create more variants of the simple exercises I just stated, and remember we are still talking about biceps !


By now you should understand, if you have a sound sense of reasoning, 100 exercises is simply a joke, a pair of dumbells can produce over 1000 concepts easily and even more training programs.  


If you, train consistently at home for a few years, with 2 dumbells and an adjustable bench, and if you increase the load at the right time to push yourself further, while giving your body the adequate nutrition to support muscle growth and long hours of sleep, you will create an absolute monster.





Remember, working in the gym will always be superior to this. But saying that lets not under estimate the power of dumbells.


I see a lot of people using light dumbells for years, doing a mediocre workout which doesn’t make sense. Programming is poor, they don’t even have a vision, it’s like, they exercise for the sake of it, with a naive belief that allocating some time and swinging some equipment would yield them the true benefits of exercise. Which is why they seem to have not progressed for a long time.


The summary is, if you think you don't have the time for workouts at a gym, you can still build an incredible physique with the concept of dumbbells.


And, think of it this way, out there, they will show you, that you need things which you don’t, but the truth is, most things in life, is just like this pair of dumbells, simple, yet effective, if you use it right, you will be happy.
