Split System Training

Who actually came up with this idea ? What was training like before these ideas were even there ? Did people just lift whatever they like and call it a day.

To be honest I don’t know who invented the Split System Training, but I do know that Joe Weider’s collection of training principles and ideas had a great deal in influencing contemporary training principles and in disseminating a great deal of our modern training styles.

The Weider System consists of training methods, ideas and principles that were collected by Joe Weider personally over many years. The concept of splitting your workouts to train specific body parts was Weider’s phenomenal contribution to the bodybuilding community.

Split routines allow a greater training stimulus per muscle group as well as less sets per individual training session and more recovery between training sessions.

The split can be made in many ways. My personal favorite is combining chest, lats and triceps as a group and training shoulders, legs and biceps on the consecutive day. Other variations such as the Push Pull style or training upper body and lower body separately are also available.

There’s no universally accepted split that provides the greatest benefits. Feel free to change sequences and identify what works the best for you !
